Proverbs Bible Study
The book of Proverbs invites people everywhere to glean from the wisdom from above and teaches us how to live in the fear of the Lord. In Proverbs, one will find a collection of generations of wisdom available to everyone so each one can grow in wisdom as the principles are applied therein. The book brilliantly describes God's wisdom, His principles, and informs the reader how to apply the truths to life on Earth. The book also warns us of what it looks like to live by our own wisdom instead of by God's and the consequences that follow.
A good definition of a biblical proverb is “a short saying that expresses a general truth for practical, godly living.” The Hebrew word translated “proverb” comes from a root word meaning “to be like”; thus, the book of Proverbs is full of comparisons showing us how various images illustrate the fundamental truths of life. Since the book of Proverbs is part of the Bible’s wisdom literature, it is appropriate to interpret its contents differently than other generes we find in the Bible. Proverbs are not necessarily to be taken literally, and they are not promises; rather, they are truisms, an acknowledgment of a common reality, and are generally found to be true.
